10 Spider-Man storylines that Brand New Day may feature

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer just dropped, and theories are already bubbling on the internet. The clip is only two minutes and forty seconds, but it teases a lot, from heroes to villains to beloved Spider-Man comics storylines that fans are dying to see in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Any Spidey fans who follow the comics surely noticed the many comic storylines the trailer is hinting at.

The trailer is full of references to potential storylines for Spider-Man: Brand New Day. From The Punisher’s debut all those years ago to less mainstream stuff like Immortal Hulk: Great Power to the widely regarded The Other, all these could be main inspirations for the next MCU film. Only time will tell, but fans are excited about the possibilities.

The Punisher’s Debut Is A Great Spider-Man Team-Up

Since Marvel Studios revealed Frank Castle would appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, fans have been eager to see these two together. The trailer already teased their uncommon but hilarious dynamic, but fans really want to know what will bring them together in the movie. The answer may be on the very debut of Punisher in Marvel Comics back in 1973.

Amazing Spider-Man #129 pits Spidey and The Punisher against each other when the Jackal hires The Punisher, but Frank realizes he has been manipulated and hopes to get revenge on the villain. He escapes before he can do this, but considering Spider-Man will face at least three villains in Brand New Day, it’s only safe to imagine the movie will have Frank actually enact this vendetta on whoever villain wronged him in the first place.

Paul Rabin Is A Reminder Of Peter Parker's Relationship Issues

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer has introduced a new character to the MCU that comic fans know well: Paul Rabin, portrayed by Eman Esfandi. Now, fans can’t help but wonder whether this means the character’s comic backstory has influenced the script. Paul isn’t from Earth-616. Instead, he comes from a devastated Earth-23321, where he survived for a long time on his own after he killed his own villainous father, Dr. Benjamin Rabin, aka Wayep’s Emmisary.

The Brand New Day trailer doesn’t hint at Paul’s multiversal nature. Instead, it shows Paul to be a very regular guy, likely only in the film to antagonize Spider-Man romantically. However, comic fans can’t help but wonder if his appearance on Earth-616 will hint at life on Earth-23321 and the multiversal chaos that’s on its way to the MCU, or at least will bring Wayep into action.

Is Ned Leeds Finally Breaking Bad in the MCU?

Thanks to Jacob Batalon’s charisma, Ned Leeds has become a fan favorite supporting character in the MCU, so it would be sad to see him go villainous. However, after the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer dropped, viewers are convinced it’s happening since Batalon dons a more “emo” look in the clip. Fans believe the hair change signals a shift in moral alignment. These aren’t unfounded claims.

In the comics, Ned begins as a regular guy, working at the Daily Bugle. He becomes villainous when the Hobgoblin and the Winkler start brainwashing him to do their bidding in Amazing Spider-Man #251. After the spell that erased Peter from his mind, the MCU Ned could start glitching as well, eventually turning into Spider-Man’s most tragic villain, considering their incredible friendship.

The Punisher May Become the Hand’s Beast

One of the biggest surprises in the Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer was the inclusion of the Hand. This ancient organization generally belongs in Daredevil comics, but Spidey has had his own encounters with them, and so has The Punisher. In fact, Frank recently ended up as their target since the Hand decided The Punisher was the perfect host for The Hand's god, The Beast, so fans now wonder if this storyline will make it into the MCU.

This arc went dark very soon. The Hand resurrected Maria, Frank’s wife, only to use her as leverage and keep him as the Beast. This ensured that The Punisher would do exactly as they said since they also promised to bring his kids back. Ultimately, the Punisher only grew more and more brutal during all this. If Marvel Studios plans to go this route for Frank, things will get wild during his Special Presentation.

Hulk Will Remember Peter Parker Even if Bruce Banner Doesn’t

Since Marvel Studios announced that Mark Ruffalo would portray Bruce Banner/Hulk in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the internet has been theorizing thathe would become a core ally for Spidey. The trailer has confirmed Bruce will help Peter understand what’s happening to his body. However, it also shows Bruce doesn’t remember him. The comics have a solution to this dilemma.

Immortal Hulk: Great Responsibility takes place after Mephisto had the world forget about Peter Parker’s identity. During this series, Spidey becomes a gamma being himself for a while. Still, once he “returns” the Hulk to Bruce, they discover Hulk actually remembers Peter: Mephisto’s spell only worked on Bruce. The MCU’s Hulk may be in the same position now and be immune to Doctor Strange’s spell in Spider-Man: No Way Home, ensuring Dr. Banner’s help during these lonely times for Peter.

The MCU Is Bringing Several Spider-Man Villains Into Action

Fans knew many members of Spider-Man’s rogues gallery were on their way to the MCU, but the fact that the trailer teases half a dozen has everyone ecstatic. This clip revealed Spider-Man will face Scorpion, Boomerang, Tarantula, the Hand, Tombstone, and the mysterious character Sadie Sink is playing (which many fans still believe will be X-Men’s icon, Jean Grey).

With this in mind, comic readers can’t help but wonder if Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be inspired by “The Gauntlet.” This overarching theme in Spider-Man comics had Spider-Man go against a good chunk of villains, one by one. They aren’t working together. Instead, they're just relentless criminals who serve as steps on Spider-Man’s path towards becoming a better superhero, just like the MCU’s version needs right now.

Brand New Day May Be More Than Just The Sequel's Title

When Marvel Studios announced the fourth Spider-Man film would be titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, fans assumed it would draw inspiration from Dan Slott’s run. However, this wasn’t a guarantee since other MCU projects have strayed from the comic inspiration of their titles before. Fortunately, the teaser has confirmed the film will include some stuff from the books, like Peter's awkward reintroduction to MJ.

Following his deal with Mephisto in “One More Day,” Peter Parker has no other option but to rebuild his own life without MJ. This is very similar to his situation in Spider-Man: Brand New Day after the events in Spider-Man: No Way Home, so the inspiration is right here. Now, fans know the film will draw from the comics beyond its title, but what else about this comic could make it into the film? Fans would love to see Mister Negative in the film, too.

Is The Queen Coming to the MCU?

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer features great villains, but the main focus is definitely Peter’s transformation. Throughout the clip, he seems to get more and more ill, and he apparently gains the ability to produce organic webbing. This is definitely a reference to his 2005 transformation in the comics, which only happened after Sam Raimi introduced it in his own Spider-Man film.

In comics, Peter died and returned to life with new Spider-like abilities, like shooting organic webbing, thanks to his encounter with Adriana Soria, or The Queen. The trailer doesn’t include her. However, the MCU Peter is definitely in the middle of a transformation just like the one he went through in The Spectacular Spider-Man, right after he met her, so fans can’t help but wonder if Soria will make it into the franchise or if the MCU will give this transformation a different explanation.

The MCU Spider-Man May Be About to Evolve

No longer after gaining organic webbing thanks to the Queen, Spider-Man got new powers (like night vision and adherent back skin) during “The Other.” This storyline had Spidey become weaker and weaker due to a mysterious illness no doctor or sorcerer could handle. Ultimately, he used the last of his energy to save MJ from Morlun, then died in the hospital.

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer may be hinting towards “The Other,” too. This clip features Peter as he becomes progressively sicker, and even Bruce tells him there’s an unstoppable mutation happening on his body. Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s title hints at a new beginning that could easily mean the MCU’s Spider-Man will die and come back, stronger than ever.

Man-Spider May Be Peter Parker’s Next Form

Fans would love to see the MCU’s Spider-Man become more powerful in storylines like “The Other,” but what if his apparent transformation takes things further into more dangerous territory? Following the trailer drop, some fans believe Spider-Man will turn into Man-Spider. There are hints towards it, like Peter’s eyes going red and his CGI-edited suit potentially hiding six arms.

The Man-Spider storyline took place in comics first, during Marvel Fanfare. However, it became successful among the fans after the Spider-Man animated series adapted it in the ‘90s. When the Queen transformed Peter into a huge spider in Spider-Man: Disassembled, fans got another glimpse at it, and he has been a staple of Spider-Man's history ever since. Now, there’s a big chance it will make it into the MCU too.
