Thomas Markle confirms new relationship with nurse – who's 35 years his junior
Thomas Markle has found love again, with the former lighting director now in a relationship with Filipina nurse, Rio Canedo, who is 35 years his junior.
The 81-year-old former lighting director first met the 46-year-old nurse, who has a 16-year-old son, when he was admitted to a hospital in the Philippines after he suffered a blood clot in the Asian nation last December. Thomas required emergency surgery following the health incident, and had his left leg amputated from below the knee.
Speaking to the Mail about his new relationship, Thomas said: "I never expected to find joy and happiness again at my age. I felt neglected and sad for so many years but now I am enjoying life again. After so many tough times I feel truly blessed to have found someone very special who takes such good care of me."
He continued: "After my stroke things were not great. I wanted to go to the other side of the world to a place where the people are kind. The Philippines have a gentler way of life. I never expected to meet Rio and have my life changed in such a wonderful way."
Rio said that the pair first crossed paths when he waved at her while he was being admitted to hospital. The nurse joked that Thomas had a reputation for being "grumpy" but that she always found him to be a "gentleman".
The publication reported that the pair were openly affectionate with each other, laughing frequently with one another and even poking fun at each other.
And it appears that marriage isn't completely off the cards, with Thomas saying: "I would marry Rio if it was beneficial to her, but it's not something we’ve discussed. For now we are just enjoying life. I am grateful every morning I wake up and feel safe and cared for. Rio has made me very happy."
Thomas' health woes
Last December, Thomas was rushed to intensive care, where he underwent a three-hour-long surgery at a hospital in the Philippines. His son, Thomas Jr, told the Daily Mail: "I took dad to a hospital close to our home and they did various scans and the doctors said his life was in imminent danger."
It was subsequently reported that the surgery Thomas had undergone had involved the amputation of his left leg below the knee. Thomas Jr. told the Daily Mail: "My dad is being very brave. His foot turned blue then black. It happened very quickly. I took him to a local hospital and they did some scans and an ultrasound and said the leg had to be amputated."
A row also broke out over whether Thomas' estranged daughter, Meghan Markle, had reached out to her father following the news of his hospitalisation. A spokesperson for the Duchess of Sussex said: "I can confirm she has reached out to her father."
This was denied at the time by Thomas, but Meghan was able to eventually reach out to him. A spokesperson said that a letter written by her was now "safely" in the hands of her father.
