Ellenville Central School District removed from state Education Department's target district list

KINGSTON, N.Y. —The Ellenville Central School District has been removed from the state Education Department’s “target district” list, Ulster BOCES announced this week.
Ulster BOCES said in a press release Thursday, March 26, that the state has elevated both the district’s elementary school and Ellenville Junior/Senior High School to its local support and improvement designation, which aligns with the state’s former “good standing” status.
Officials said the new designation was the result of the work of educators, interventionists, students, support staff, and families to ensure that “students attend school consistently, receive high-quality instruction aligned with the New York state learning standards, and benefit from the academic and social-emotional supports they need to thrive.”
The state Education Department said that while districts under the local support and improvement designation do not meet the criteria for required state or district-led support, the agency encourages them to “examine year-to-year performance data to identify areas of concern, monitor progress, and implement strategies to improve achievement in identified areas.”
“This is a meaningful milestone for our school community, and one that reflects the tireless efforts of our entire team,” Ellenville Central School District Superintendent Lisa Wiles said in the release. “Together, we have demonstrated that focused, strategic work yields results.”
Ulster BOCES added that district officials are not viewing the local support and improvement designation as a finish line.
“Our work remains especially critical for the student groups previously identified for support — students with disabilities and Black or African American students,” Wiles said in the release. “Every one of us plays a role in ensuring that all students experience rigorous and responsive instruction, targeted intervention, and high expectations every single day.”
BOCES also said moving forward, the district will continue to rely on its School Improvement Plan, built upon “research-based strategies.”
“This work will continue to guide our instructional decisions, resource allocation, and daily practice,” Wiles said.
